Ironman Training: Why Easy Runs Matter More Than You Think

Day 81 of training.
Today was just a slow 10k. It felt… slow. And honestly, a bit tough. The kind of run where your legs ask, “Why are we doing this again?” But this, right here, is the work that matters.

Many runners fall into the trap of trying to beat yesterday every single day. But running doesn’t work like that — not if you want to improve. Not if you want to avoid injury. Not if you’re training for a goal like mine: running a marathon in under 3 hours, eventually. The key? Patience and structure.

I follow a simple weekly plan:

  • 🏃‍♂️ Two hard sessions per week — one speed workout midweek, one long endurance run on Sunday.
  • 🧘‍♂️ All other runs? Easy. Slow. Controlled. Just like today.
  • ❌ No chasing pace. No proving anything. These runs are about recovery and building aerobic endurance.

And you know what? It works. I’m logging the weekly mileage. I’m building the engine. I’m staying healthy. I’m progressing.

So if you’re reading this and wondering if that slow jog is even worth it: it is. Don’t skip your easy days. Respect the structure. It’s what separates training from jogging.

Keep going.
